Mental illness refers to a wide range of psychological or emotional conditions that affect a person’s thinking, behavior, and mood. These disorders can interfere with daily functioning and include conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, among others. Symptoms can vary widely and may include changes in mood, difficulty concentrating, withdrawal from social activities, and physical symptoms like changes in sleep or appetite. Mental illnesses are often treatable through therapy, medication, or a combination of both.
Prison Reform & Re-Entry
Prison reform refers to efforts aimed at improving conditions within the prison system and addressing issues such as overcrowding, inadequate healthcare, and harsh sentencing laws. It often emphasizes rehabilitation over punishment, advocating for alternatives to incarceration, such as diversion programs, restorative justice, and mental health support. The goal is to reduce recidivism, promote social reintegration, and ensure that the rights and dignity of inmates are respected. Key issues include reducing racial and socioeconomic disparities, improving living conditions, and providing education and vocational training.
